A Prizm is Panini's refractive chrome finish: a card printed on chromium stock with a reflective layer that throws colour across the surface when it is tilted. Mechanically it is the same idea as a Topps refractor. The word is Panini's, and it is used two ways — as the name of a product line, and as the name of the finish that appears inside many Panini products.

It matters more than any other single term in modern sports cards, because the Prizm ladder is the biggest and most heavily traded parallel structure in the hobby. When a collector says "I pulled a Prizm", they almost always mean a colour or pattern version, not the base card.

How the ladder is built

1. The base prizm. Usually a plain silver-toned refractive version with no serial number — see Silver Prizm. It is the floor of the ladder and the most traded card in the set.
2. Patterns. The same finish etched with a texture: Cracked Ice, Disco, Wave, Shimmer, Hyper, Lazer and more, several of which are tied to a specific sales channel.
3. Colours. Tints stacked over plain or patterned prizms, ordered by convention — plain at the floor, golds high, blacks at or near the top.
4. Serial numbers. Once numbering begins, a smaller run outranks a larger one, and the run is printed on the card. The colours that carry a number, and the numbers themselves, are re-cut every product year.

Identifying one

Tilt it under a single hard light: a prizm sheens across the whole card, while a paper base card with foil stamping only glints in the stamped areas. Then read the parallel name after the dash in the set line, and check both faces for a serial stamp — Panini puts it on the front on some products and the back on others.
