Cracked Ice is a refractive finish etched into a web of sharp, angular fractures, so the card looks like a pane of shattered glass held over the image. It is one of the most recognisable parallels in the hobby precisely because the pattern is so unlike the smooth sweep of a plain prizm or refractor.

How to spot it

• Straight lines, irregular shapes. The fractures are angular and branching — nothing curved, nothing repeating.
• Whole-card coverage. The cracks run over the photograph and the borders alike.
• It reads at any angle. Unlike most pattern parallels, cracked ice is visible even in flat light, which is why it photographs and sells well online.

The same visual idea shows up across manufacturers under different names — Panini uses Cracked Ice, and Topps has run crackle-style finishes of its own in several products. Treat the name as product vocabulary and the pattern as the thing you are actually identifying.
