Hobby vs Retail

Also written: Hobby · Retail · Hobby box · Blaster

The two channels a product is sold through — and the reason the same colour can be two different cards.

ConceptVocabulary rather than a finish

Most modern products are sold through two channels. Hobby product goes to card shops and distributors; retail product goes to big-box and grocery shelves in blasters, hangers and value packs. They share a base set and a design — and they do not share a parallel ladder.

Why it matters more than it sounds

  • Some colours are exclusive to one channel. A retail-only colour cannot be pulled from a hobby box at any odds, which is what quietly stalls a rainbow run years in.
  • The same colour name can exist in both channels with different scarcity. The name on the card does not tell you which one you have; the checklist does.
  • Hobby product usually guarantees a hit per box and costs more per pack. Retail does not, and the difference in expected value is priced in.
