A refractor is a card printed on chrome stock with a refractive layer over the image. Under a room light it looks like a slightly glossy base card. Tilt it under a single hard light and a rainbow sheen sweeps across the entire surface — not a glint in one corner, a wave that travels as the angle changes.

It is the most important finish in the modern sports hobby, because almost everything that came after is a variation on it. Topps introduced refractors in Finest in 1993 and the trick has not changed since: chrome underneath, a refractive layer on top, and a card that behaves differently in the hand than it does in a scan.

How to spot one in hand

1. Use one light source. Refraction needs an angle. Under diffuse office lighting a refractor and a base card look nearly identical, which is exactly how they get sorted into commons.
2. Tilt slowly and watch the whole card. The sheen should move across the full surface. If the shine sits only in the name plate or the logo, that is ordinary foil stamping on a base card.
3. Look at the edge of the stock. Chrome cards have a visibly different edge from paper — obvious the moment you hold two cards together.
4. Read everything after the dash in the set name. A set line ending in "Refractor" is the plain refractor; anything in front of that word is a colour or a pattern stacked on top of it.

Refractor is a family, not one card

The plain refractor is the floor. Everything above it is the same stock with something added, and the additions stack — which is why a chase card is usually a colour AND a pattern AND a serial number at once.

Colour refractors

The same finish tinted — orange, blue, green, red, gold, black and whatever a product invented that year. This is the ladder, and its ordering is a convention re-cut annually. Read the run off the card, not off a guide.

Pattern refractors

The layer etched with a texture: X-Fractor, Atomic, wave and ray-wave variants, and a long tail of product-specific names. A pattern almost always sits above the plain refractor of the same colour.
