ConceptVocabulary rather than a finish

Downtown is a Panini insert series: a hand-illustrated card placing a player against the skyline and landmarks of their city. It is not a parallel of anything — it is its own card, with its own artwork, its own numbering scheme and its own odds.

It matters because it is one of the small number of inserts that drives the price of the product it lives in. Downtowns are seeded thinly, and in several products a Downtown of a popular player outsells the top of the base parallel ladder. When an insert becomes the reason people open a box, it has become the chase card.

What to check before buying one

• Which product. Downtown runs in more than one Panini line, and the versions are not interchangeable. Match the set line exactly before comparing prices.
• Whether it is the base version or a parallel. Downtowns can have parallels of their own, including serial-numbered ones — inserts have ladders too.
• Condition, carefully. Illustrated inserts frequently use heavy ink coverage to the edge, and edge whitening shows badly on them.
