An Ultimate Rare is a Yu-Gi-Oh! card that has been physically embossed. The artwork, the card frame and the border elements are raised into relief, so the design stands up off the surface and catches light from its own edges. The card name is printed in gold foil, as on an Ultra Rare.

It is the one rarity you identify by touch

Run a fingertip across the artwork. On every other Yu-Gi-Oh! rarity the face is flat; on an Ultimate Rare you can feel the outline of the monster and the ridges of the frame. Photographs of Ultimate Rares are frequently ambiguous for exactly this reason — the relief only reads in raking light — so when buying one from a picture, ask for a shot taken at an angle with a single light source.

Condition is the hard part

• The raised areas take all the wear. Every peak in the relief is an exposed surface; sliding an Ultimate Rare across a table scuffs the design and not the background.
• The embossing catches on sleeves and binder pages. Loading one carelessly can leave a mark along a ridge.
• They grade harder than flat cards of the same age, which is a large part of why a high-grade Ultimate carries the premium it does.

As a tier, the Ultimate is seeded well below the Ultra Rare of the same card, so a widely played card in Ultimate form is one of the strongest premiums in Yu-Gi-Oh! collecting. Related in mechanism, though not in game: die-cut cards have the same problem for the same reason — the manufacturing step that makes the card special is also what makes it fragile.
