Surge Foil

A Magic foil finish carrying a rippling wave pattern that sweeps across the card when it is tilted.

Surge foil is a Magic: The Gathering finish in which the reflective layer carries a rippling, wave-like pattern running across the whole card face. Tilt the card and the ripples travel over it in a visible sweep, like light moving over water.

How to spot one

Use one hard light source — a lamp, a phone torch, a window — and tilt the card slowly through the angle. Under diffuse room light a surge foil looks like an ordinary foil and the pattern is effectively invisible, which is precisely why people miss it. This is the same identification discipline that applies to every patterned finish in every hobby, including the sports-side cracked ice: the pattern is only there at an angle.

What it is and is not

It is a finish, applied to a subset of a set's cards alongside the ordinary foil version. The card plays identically.
It is not the same as [etched foil](/guides/glossary/etched-foil), which produces a fine grain rather than a large travelling ripple.
It is not [textured foil](/guides/glossary/textured-foil), which you can feel. Surge foil is a visual pattern in the foil layer; the card surface stays smooth.
