Short Print

A card printed in deliberately smaller quantities than the rest of its set, usually without a serial number to prove it.

A short print — SP, or SSP for a super short print — is a card produced in deliberately smaller quantities than the rest of its set. The defining frustration is that short prints usually carry no marking at all. There is no serial number, no "SP" on the card, and often no visible difference from an ordinary base card beyond a changed photograph.

How anyone knows

  1. The manufacturer publishes it on the odds sheet or checklist.
  2. The community documents it — card numbers get catalogued by collectors opening cases and comparing what they find.
  3. The card is a photo variation: same number, different picture, and the different picture is the short print.
