Colour Match

When something about the parallel lines up with the subject — the tint matching team colours, or the serial matching a jersey number.

ConceptVocabulary rather than a finish

A match is a coincidence between a card's parallel and its subject. Two different coincidences trade under the name, and it is worth keeping them apart because they are priced differently.

Team colour match

The parallel's tint happens to be one of the subject's team colours — a green parallel of a player on a green team, a purple of a purple team. Nothing about the card is scarcer than the same colour of any other player; the card simply looks like it was made on purpose, and collectors of that team pay for that.

Jersey number match

The serial number stamped on the card happens to equal the subject's jersey number. Exactly one copy of that card can ever have it, so this is a genuine one-per-card coincidence rather than an aesthetic one, and it is the version that reliably carries a real premium.

How to check

1. Read the serial on the card, not the parallel name. The name tells you the run; only the stamp tells you which copy you hold.
2. Check the jersey number for the right season. Players change numbers, and the match is usually taken against the number worn on the card.
3. Confirm the team colour claim. Team palettes change, and an alternate-jersey colour is a weaker claim than a primary one.
