A Starlight Rare — also printed and discussed as an Alternate Rare — is a Yu-Gi-Oh! card whose entire face is covered in a fine, faceted foil pattern. The effect looks like the card has been cut from crystal: light fractures across it in small planes as it moves.

How to spot one

The distinguishing feature is coverage. Almost every Yu-Gi-Oh! rarity foils one region — the name, or the artwork, or both. A Starlight Rare foils everything, including the card text box, the attribute area and the borders. If the paragraph of rules text is sitting on a shimmering faceted surface, you have found the tier and you do not need a second check.

It falls at case frequency

Starlight Rares are seeded far below pack level — closer to one per sealed case than one per box, which makes them a case hit in the ordinary sense of the phrase. The practical consequence is the one that always follows from case-level odds: buying a box does not give you a realistic shot at one, and the scarcity is priced into sealed product as much as into the single.
