Holo Rare

A holo rare is a Pokémon card whose picture box is printed on reflective foil while the border, the text box and the rest of the card stay flat and matte. It is the oldest premium finish in the game and, for a long stretch of Pokémon's printing history, it was the card people meant when they said they "hit something" in a pack.

How to spot one

Tilt the card under a single hard light, not a room light. On a holo rare, only the artwork window sweeps light. Everything around it stays dead flat.
Check the rarity mark in the bottom corner. Pokémon prints its rarity as a small symbol — a circle, a diamond, a star — and a holo rare carries the star used for rares. The foil is a treatment applied on top of that rarity; it does not change it.
Compare against the same card without foil if the set printed one. Same artwork, same card number, same text — the foil is the only difference.

Why it matters less than it used to

Modern Pokémon sets stack several premium rarities above the plain holo rare — full arts, illustration rares, gold cards — so the holo slot is now the floor of the premium range rather than its ceiling. A holo rare of an ordinary Pokémon is usually a common-money card. What still carries weight is a holo of a subject people collect, and the fact that older holo rares are genuinely hard to find in top condition.
